Anchor on the total price, not the monthly.

Confidence

You are hiring the dealer. Act like it.

Coaching Lessons

Short, useful, in your language.

  • Negotiate the out-the-door price, never the monthly payment. Monthly is a lever the dealer controls by stretching the loan.
  • Anchor with a specific number that comes from research: 'I'm targeting $32,400 out the door based on comparable listings this week.'
  • Silence is a feature, not a bug. After you make an offer, stop talking. The next person to speak usually loses ground.
  • Split price, trade-in, and financing into three separate conversations. Bundling them is how buyers lose $2,000 without noticing.
  • Always be willing to leave. Your leverage is your willingness to walk. Bring a ride, not a promise.

Ask for the out-the-door price

Hi — I'm ready to move on the [Year Make Model, trim] this week. Please send the full out-the-door price in writing, including all fees and taxes, so I can compare cleanly across dealers. Thanks!

Remove add-ons

Thanks for the quote. Please remove the [dealer add-ons] from the deal — I won't be financing those. Send an updated OTD figure once revised and I can commit.

Counter with a target OTD

Based on comparable listings this week and what I've seen from other dealers, my target is $[XX,XXX] out the door on this exact configuration. If we can meet there today, I'm ready to leave a deposit.

Polite walk-away

I appreciate your time and the work on the numbers. This isn't going to work for me at that price. If anything changes on the OTD, feel free to reach out — otherwise no need to follow up. Thanks again.

Golden Rules

The 5 rules that save the most money.

  1. 1

Negotiate out-the-door only. Monthly payment is a distraction.

  2. 2

Get every number in writing before you drive to the dealer.

  3. 3

Bring outside financing. It changes the whole conversation.

  4. 4

Decline add-ons unless you researched them separately.

  5. 5

Willingness to leave is your entire leverage — protect it.
