The short answer
Out-the-door price = selling price + tax + government charges (title and registration) + dealer charges (documentation, e-filing) + anything optional you agreed to buy. It does not include your down payment or trade-in — those reduce what you finance, not what the car costs.
A worked example
Two dealers quote the same car. Dealer A says "$31,500 and we'll beat anyone." Dealer B says "$31,900." Most buyers pick A. Here is the whole picture.

Dealer A's lower price costs $1,403 more. Nothing in that gap is tax or government money — it is entirely dealer-controlled: a bigger paperwork fee, a filing fee, and two add-ons. This is the normal shape of a car deal, not an unusual one.
The three places money hides
- 1Below the price: fees and add-ons that only appear once you are far enough in to feel committed.
- 2Inside the payment: a longer term or a marked-up rate makes a worse OTD look like a better month.
- 3Inside the trade: a generous-looking trade allowance funded by a higher selling price, or a payoff quietly rolled into the new loan.
What to ask for, word for word
"Please send me a written out-the-door figure with every line itemised, including all fees and any add-ons, for this exact VIN." If you get a monthly payment back instead, ask again. A dealer that will not put an itemised total in writing has told you something useful.
Out-the-door sanity check
- Is there one total, in writing, for a specific VIN?
- Is every fee its own line with a dollar amount?
- Can you name who receives each charge — government or dealership?
- Is tax calculated on the amount you expected?
- Are add-ons listed individually, and did you agree to each one?
- Does the written total match the number you were told out loud?
